Commentary
[ Hide commentary ]The authenticity of fragments 82 and 83 (both from Plato's Hippias Major 289a-b) is much disputed. Burnet thought that we could reconstruct one original fragment based on these two passages: "The wisest man is an ape compared to God, just as the most beautiful ape is ugly compared to man." This fragment would then have the same form as fragment 79. But this is speculation. Most scholars count them as doubtful.
