Commentary

[ Hide commentary ]

Some commentators have proposed an emendation to this text. They change ἡδὺ καὶ ἀγαθόν (pleasant and good) to ἡδὺ, κακὸν ἀγαθόν ('pleasant, evil good'). This yields the following translation:

"It is sickness that makes health pleasant; [it is] evil [that makes] good [pleasant]; [it is] hunger [that makes] satiety [pleasant]; [it is] weariness [that makes] rest [pleasant]" (Burnet).

I see no reason for this emendation; most modern commentators reject it and read,

"It is sickness that makes health pleasant and good; [it is] hunger [that makes] satiety [pleasant and good]; [it is] weariness [that makes] rest [pleasant and good]."
