Commentary

[ Hide commentary ]

Most commentators accept the phrase ὄνους σύρματ' ἂν ἑλέσθαι μᾶλλον ἢ χρυσόν ('asses prefer straw to gold') as Heraclitus' own, while the rest of the fragment they identify as comments made by Aristotle. (The source for this fragment is Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics.)
