ἕν τὸ σοφὸν μοῦνον λέγεσθαι οὐκ ἐθέλει καὶ ἐθέλει Ζηνὸς ὄνομα
The wise is one only. It is unwilling and willing to be called by the name of Zeus.

[ Hide commentary ]Heraclitus uses the obscure word Ζηνὸς here for Zeus, which is related to the Greek verb ζάω (to live). Some commentators have conjectured that Heraclitus intends this as a play on words. See also fragment 48 (for a clear example of such a play on words) and fragment 11 (for another example of scholarly conjecture).
