God is day and night, winter and summer, war and peace, satiety and hunger; but he takes various shapes, just as fire, when it is mingled with spices, is named according to the savor of each.

Commentary
[ Hide commentary ]The word πῦρ does not appear in the text, but most commentators believe that some noun goes in its place. Kahn chooses not to and translates this part of the fragment as "... it alters, as when mingled with perfumes." I think that Heraclitus had some noun in mind, and the missing noun most likely comes from earlier in Heraclitus' book. Hippolytus equates God and fire earlier in the passage, and so it seems possible to me that πῦρ is indeed the missing noun.
Fragments 64, 65, 66, and 67 all come from the same passage of Hippolytus.
