We should not act and speak like 'children of our parents': i.e., in the way that has been handed down to us (Kahn).

It seems likely that Marcus Aurelius has correctly quoted Heraclitus when he says, οὐ δεῖ ὡς παῖδας τοκεώνων. This phrase is in the Ionic dialect, and refers to ποιεῖν καὶ λέγειν from fragment 73. Marcus Aurelius' explanation of this fragment (i.e., 'in the way that has been handed down to us') may or may not be what Heraclitus had in mind and should be treated with caution.
