σάρμα εἰκῇ κεχυμένον ὁ κάλλιστος, φησὶν Ἡράκλειτος, [ὁ] κόσμος

Commentary
[ Hide commentary ]The text for this fragment is very doubtful and should be handled extremely carefully. The first word in the manuscripts is σάρξ ('flesh'); it has been emend it to σάρμα ('sweepings'). The manuscripts also have κεχυμένων ('of pouring-outs', genitive plural), which has been emended to κεχυμένον ('a pouring-out', nominative singular). With the text being such a problem to start with, any significant information pulled from this fragment will have to be conjecture.
The word εἰκῇ also appears in fragment 47.
