Fragment 76

πυρὸς θάνατος ἀέρι γένεσις, καὶ ἀέρος θάνατος ὕδατι γένεσις

The death of fire is the birth of air, and the death of air is the birth of water.

Three different sources quote this fragment, each a little differently. Diels included all three in his edition, and Bywater prefers Maximus of Tyre's version. I follow Kahn in asserting that only the one given by Plutarch could be a verbatim of Heraclitus (Kahn Excursus II, 153f).
